Ketogenic Diet for Cancer - Clinical Trial

The University of Pittsburgh will be conducting a clinical trial of the ketogenic diet to treat cancer.  Here is a link with more information about the trial.

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01716468?term=NCT01716468&rank=1
The concept here is that cancer cells use glucose or the amino acid glutamine as their source of energy but cannot use ketones.  On a ketogenic diet with caloric restriction, there is very little glucose for the cancer cells to feed off of and they die, causing the tumor to shrink.  This could allow for more easily removing the tumor by surgery, or weaken it so that it is more susceptible to chemotherapy, for example.  Small metastases could outright die.

Normal cells can use glucose or ketones as fuel and so, while cancer cells are deprived of their energy source with the ketogenic diet, normal cells can readily switch over to using ketones and are not affected.

This concept is discussed in detail in the book Cancer as a Metabolic Disease by Dr. Thomas Seyfried of Boston College, who has done extensive work studying this in glioblastoma.  Animal studies conducted at University of South Florida by Dr. Dominic D'Agostino and others have shown tremendous promise.  They have been looking at various combinations of ketogenic diet with other treatments, such as ketone esters and 1,3 - butanediol to raise ketone levels, other agents to lower blood sugar, and also use of hyperbaric oxygen.  The results with shrinking cancerous tumors in mice have been quite dramatic for several of these combinations.  A number of cancer patients are now trying this treatment with success as well.

This treatment was featured on The 700 Club recently. The video can be seen here:

  • Dr. Newport,

I accidentally left the page before signing my comment regarding the book reference provided (Aging with Grace by Dr. David Snowdon - my mother had Alzheimer's as did several other members of my family and I am particularly interested in knowing possible nutritional prevention methods). I think Dr. Snowdon may be a good contact for this Alzheimer/coconut oil connection because of what I read in this book about him as a physician and about his studies.

I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in 2009 and have had no surgery, chemo, radiation, only following homeopathic methods to improve my immune system (cancer is a disease of the immune system)so my body can perform the way God intended. I am seeing a homeopathic chiropractor in Tampa, have Meridian Stress Assessment testing performed on a regular basis, consume an organic diet free of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, with limited meat/dairy (See also "Forks over Knives" - documentary of 2 physicians who began treating patients who had been cast aside as hopeless by the medical community with organic diets and lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and supplementation with amazing results). I will never allow a physician to control my health - that is my responsibility and I have that control by watching my food intake and monitoring/correcting nutritionally, supplementally, and homeopathic drops as my protocol from the Meridian Stress Assessment testing recommends. I would be glad to provide the name of my homeopathic chiropractor if you are interested in having your husband participate in a scan - just email me at work: nbarker@ufl.edu and I will happily provide the information to you. I am sure that one day (maybe not in my lifetime), Western medicine will realize that most diseases are not brought on by a deficiency in a drug, or surgery. Our bodies are living cells that are fed by healthy, nutritious foods, and without the building blocks to feed these cells, they get sick and diseased. Yes, cancer thrives in an acidic environment and sugar feeds those cancer cells. I am also taking a powdered supplement to build my glutathione as recommended by my homeopath (GHSImmunity - it can be ordered from the web). Glutathione is very important in brain function - please also consider investigating this critical nutrient. Thanks - Nina Barker - I sincerely hope this post is read by you. Please email or call - 352.804.8703 is my cell and my home phone is 352.466.3539.

  • Nina is so absolutely right on.My husband was diagnosed with bladder cancer stage 2 and his urologist went for the slash and burn recommendations and said we had no time to waste. We said thanks and left and started a protocol very
simular to Nina.I would recommend reading a book by Raymond Francis
    called "Never Fear Cancer Again".
He lays the cancer story out very clearly.Otto Warburg found the cause of cancer in 1930 and his work is ignored by conventional
medicine. What does it say about an oncologist who has candy in his waiting room? We agree with Nina that no one is in charge of our health but us.
